I’ve just released the first update to Pictography. This update includes some theme SQL and CSS optimizations along with one new color palette. Here’s the details:

  • Recent Posts Widget (SQL optimization) – Added checkbox option controlling display of image thumbnails.
NOTE: During testing, I noticed that displaying thumbnails for 5 posts adds ~14 SQL per page request. Currently, I don’t see a way around this, so I’ve added the option of turning off the thumbnails if you need to conserve resources on your server. As an example with 5 recent posts and the Featured Excerpt widget activated on the front page, for the entire page, I noted  31 queries with thumbnails “on” and 19 queries with thumbnails “off”.
  • styles.css (CSS optimization) – Removed unused 960gs CSS elements.
  • Removed extra files – Deleted extraneous image and CSS files under /includes/.
  • New color palette: Mom’s Eye Shadow – While I was creating the Pictography Color Options screencast, I came up with a new color palette which I’ve added to the theme’s settings page.
